Spearhead Ski Traverse, British Columbia

Spearhead Ski Traverse [img:938bdee379]http://www.leelau.net/2006/spearheadmar1206/spearheadmap.jpg[/img:938bdee379] The Spearhead Traverse was one of the classic ski traverses of the Coast Range, long before the Blackcomb downhill ski area was built. Nowdays, parties can either start at Whistler itself, or buy a one time lift pass up Blackcomb mountain. Either way, the traverse itself features lots of up and down on spectacular slopes, and a variety of small peaks that can be climbed. It can be done in either direction, and an increasing number of parties are completing the circuit as a day trip in ideal conditions. On the other hand, some parties have been stormed out and taken over a week. Park at the village of Whistler, and walk the dirt road to get to the old trailhead of the Singing Pass Trail. From the pass continue to the low pass southwest of Russet Lake and gain the Fissile-Whirlwind col. Contour along the upper Overlord Glacier to a cirque on the west side of Overlord Mountain. Climb a steep couloir on the northwest ridge of Overload Mountain, skirt the north side of the mountain, and continue southeast to the Diavolo-Benvolio col. Head east along the Diavolio Glacier passing Mount Fitzimmons and climb north up to the east ridge of Mount Iago. Ski north along the upper Iago Glacier and follow a ridge to the Macbeth Glacier. Climb to the head of the Macbeth Glacier and on to the Naden Glacier. Cross the col east of The Ripsaw to the Ripsaw Glacier and to another col just west of Quiver Peak. Follow the Platform Glacier to a col on the northwest side of Tremor Mountain. Contour along the upper Tremor Glacier to the south side of Mount Pattison. Head northwest along the Trorey Glacier to a low col on the northwest side of Mount Trorey. A long downhill will bring you to the lower part of the Decker Glacier. Head west up a hill to the Circle Glacier and then up a steep hill to the Blackcomb-Spearhead col. Go northwest along the upper Blackcomb Glacier where you gain a roof-top ridge that spits you out to the Horstman Glacier which is part of the Blackcomb ski area. Follow the ski runs down to the village. If you do the traverse in the opposite direction you can purchase a ski pass to take you to the top of the Horstman Glacier, saving you about 1600 m of elevation gain.
